I am in LOVE with this smoothie.

Getting plenty of protein in for the first meal of the day is crucial for both women and men. It basically sets up the tone for how hungry you’ll feel for the rest of the day.

This smoothie is packed with protein, good fat, and fiber which we all need for a healthy gut.

Don’t be afraid of a little bit of sugar from the medjool date. Dates are full of vitamins, minerals, and more fiber, plus they taste great. Just keep it to one date and don’t sweat it. It’s balanced out with all the protein, fat, and fiber in this smoothie.

I prefer medjool dates over the more common deglet noor date – the medjool variety is softer, sweeter, and larger. Medjool dates can be found in the bulk section of most natural grocery stores. I pick mine up at Whole Foods or The Fresh Market.

If you’re wondering what maca powder is, it’s an adaptogen (a plant used to help bring balance to the body – they’re everywhere right now) and comes from a root vegetable that’s found in South America. It tastes slightly malty, and some people believe it helps to balance hormones in both women and men, leading to increased energy, better sex drive, and more focus.

Try this smoothie in your weekly breakfast rotation for great morning energy and vibrancy…

Vanilla Almond Butter Date Smoothie

Makes one smoothie

  • 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk or other favorite nut milk
  • 1 serving of vanilla protein powder (I shoot for around 20 grams of protein)
  • 1 medjool date, pit removed
  • 1-2 tablespoons of almond butter (no sugars added)
  • 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of maca powder (I like this one)
  • 1/2 cup of ice (add more for a thicker consistency, less if you like your smoothies more liquid)

  1. Add all ingredients to a high speed blender.
  2. Blend.
  3. Enjoy!
